Film web coating machines are used in a variety of high technology, versatile processes, which can effectively manufacture a wide range of coated products from packaging films, speciality papers to adhesive and cosmetics.
This two day course is designed to provide the technical understanding required to develop new film web coating products and optimise the conditions of existing products. The instruction will make use of specialist software that attendees can install onto their laptops and use in the practical exercises.
Day 1
- Introduction to the film web coating processes
- Review of Typical Coating Processes
- Defects Methodology (AIMCAL Defects Library)
- On-line Inspection Techniques
- Defects due to the Solution Supply, Substrate, Coating and Drying Process
- Defects generated between Coating and Drying and by Transport Rolls
- Case Studies relating to Understanding / Minimising Defects
- Formulation Design
- Contract Coating and External Resources
- Shearing and pumping of fluids, substrate wettability, surface tension and coating solution rheology
- Pre-metered film web coating processes (slot and curtain coating). Practical exercises with software tool to help understand how process and coating solution properties affect the film quality and operating window.
Day 2
- Self-metered film web coating processes (dip, rigid/non-rigid reverse roll, multiple rolls). Practical exercises using software to aid understanding of how and why the process and coating solution parameters control film thickness and its quality.
- Kiss and Gravure coating.
- Drying of the film. Practical work using software to study effect of coating solution and process properties on the drying of the film. Single and multiple solvents. Flotation, single or double sided drying.
- Full system case studies which considers the combined effects of coating solution rheology, delivery, coating and drying.
Who will benefit from the course.
The course should benefit a wide range of people working in the film coating and drying fields, including product formulation and development scientists, product scale-up personnel, coating operators, managers seeking an understanding of film web coating and drying processes, and new personnel wishing to become familiar with film coating and drying.
